Born in Denmark to Icelandic parents, Gunnar Freyr Gunnarsson's story begins in the vibrant 1980s. Growing up in Denmark, he cultivated an identity deeply rooted in both Danish and Icelandic cultures. His journey back to his ancestral land in 2015 marked a new chapter, as he embraced Iceland with the fresh perspective of a native and the curiosity of a newcomer.
Trading Corporate Life for Creative Pursuits
Gunnar's academic and early professional life was as dynamic as his multicultural upbringing. With a master's degree in Business and Auditing from Copenhagen Business School, he initially carved out a successful career at PwC, a global leader in auditing and accounting. However, in 2014, a profound desire for personal growth and adventure prompted him to leave the corporate world. Selling everything, he bought a one-way ticket to Iceland, trading his suit and tie for the comfort of Icelandic sweaters knitted by his mother.
The Emergence of an Iconic Photographer
Gunnar soon emerged as a prominent name in photography. His deep-seated passion for exploring Iceland’s landscapes led to his moniker, "The Icelandic Explorer." Gunnar's journey through photography began earnestly in 2017, following a brief stint at Reykjavik's photography school. Today, he is celebrated as an official Canon Nordic Photographer and a Squarespace Ambassador, known for capturing the raw beauty of Icelandic nature.
