South Coast, Iceland

The Icelandic word fjúk describes snow that has already settled, but is lifted gently by the wind. Not fresh snowfall. Something stirred. The landscape softens. Edges dissolve. The world becomes quieter.

Captured in February 2026 on the south coast of Iceland, this image emerged during the Year of the Horse. A luminous white horse caught my attention first. Moments later, another approached. For a brief and unspoken instant, they leaned into one another. It was not staged. It was not dramatic. It was simply closeness in the quiet movement of winter.

To me, FJÚK reflects passing intimacy. Soft, almost imperceptible, yet deeply felt. The Icelandic horse carries a rare presence. Calm. Steady. Grounded. Being near them slows the human spirit.

This photograph was taken on January 9th, 2020 and captures a time just before the pandemic, when travellers would brace the unforgiving Icelandic conditions to explore Reykjavík, the Northernmost capital in the world. It’s a snapshot from a strange time just before the pandemic - a sort of “storm before the storm”.

Horizontal snow and unforgiving winds are certain to leave a lasting memory of adventures in Iceland.
